Cellular vehicle-to-everything (C-V2X) will serve as the foundation for vehicles to communicate with each other and everything around them—providing 360º non-line-of-sight awareness and a higher level of predictability for enhanced road safety and autonomous driving.
As part of the 3rd Generation Partnership Project (3GPP) Release 14, C-V2X defines two transmission modes that, together, enable a broad range of use cases. Direct C-V2X, which includes vehicle-to-vehicle (V2V), vehicle-to-infrastructure (V2I), and vehicle-to-pedestrian (V2P), provides enhanced communication range and reliability in dedicated ITS 5.9 GHz spectrum that’s independent of a cellular network, as well as network communications (V2N) in traditional mobile broadband licensed spectrum.
When compared with 802.11p-based technologies, Direct C-V2X provides increased communication range (~2X), better non-line-of-sight (NLOS) performance, enhanced reliability, and cost efficiency without relying on cellular network assistance or coverage for enhanced safety services.
Momentum of C-V2X technologies continues to build with an unprecedented level of collaboration between the automotive and telecom industries.
C-V2X standards development was completed in March 2017, as was reusing established service and app layers as defined by automotive and standards communities like ETSI and SAE.

The evolution to 5G NR-based C-V2X will augment Rel-14 with new and complementary capabilities for autonomous driving, all while maintaining backward compatibility. Designed to support direct communications, it will incorporate 5G NR features, such as high throughput, lower latency and ultra-reliable communication capabilities to enable advanced use cases for autonomous vehicles.
