I’ve always been a lover of music. And I can also say that my musical range is very broad. Though I enjoy alternative music the most, I find pleasure in listening to classical, blues, jazz, pop, R&B, reggae, rock and even rap music genres too. I remember that I was just 12 years old and still an awkward, scrawny, naive tween when I first heard what rap music was all about. I’ve turned on the radio and heard a male with a seamless voice singing Mga Kababayan Ko on air. I wasn’t a fan of rap because I didn’t have any idea what it was but rap introduced its face to me thru Francis “Kiko” Magalona. From then on I became a follower of rap music, nationalistic rap that is. I would sing and play Cold Summer Nights over and over again and watch music videos of him. My second favorite was Girl Be Mine and of course his most beautiful song of all Kaleidoscope World. Since I used to be a day-dreamer my inclination was towards his mushy songs. But I was fond of his songs too about being brown-skinned and darn proud of it and his cry to Filipino youth. I’ve never known an artist as passionate and zealous in instilling in people’s minds that we should love our country and stand with pride that we are Filipinos other than him.

Yes, I’ve heard of other artists singing songs about patriotism and being comfortable in your own skin but Francis was different. He continued to show it in different ways; through his paintings, photographs and even merchandises. He emulated his idol and inspiration the great Jose Rizal in showing Filipinos and the Philippines how much he loves the people and the country not through written books but through his songs; his music that would always live in all of us wherever we go. He wished to unite us all with it one day. He wished that one day all the Filipinos would walk as one, think as one and love as one. He planted that seed in our hearts in the hopes that we’ll nurture and let it grow by loving our country and countrymen a little bit more each day. He may not have died for our country but who said that only those who died fighting for our country should be considered heroes? Who said that only those who shed their blood should be recognized? Who said that only those who saved us from tyranny should be honored? That is not my definition of a hero. A hero for me is somebody who displayed an extraordinary courage to initiate change and dared to make a difference in our lives in spite of and despite the untoward circumstances that our country has suffered. In spite of the scandals and scams that made our country the laughing stock of the world, he continued to be proud of the Philippines and its people. All the more that he increased his determination twofolds or maybe a thousand folds to appeal to Filipinos to take pride in being what and who they are, thus the birth of FMCC (Francis Magalona Clothing Company) with an official logo of three stars and a sun, in reverence of our beloved flag. What better way to show our love and pride for our country but to wear these hearts (that Francis helped to plant) on our sleeves? Literally speaking, these are specially designed shirts that promote love, unity, patriotism and social awareness. I’d be getting mine one of these days and I’ll proudly wear it and share my picture with you all.

FM in his remission days

I may not have the chance to see him face-to-face, I may not be able to share with you special moments that I had with him, I may not impart any sagacious advices that he told me personally and I maybe just a regular fan, a nobody, an insignificant person in Francis’ past life but allow me to say this to you with the exceptional love that he had for our country and for all us, I feel that I’ve already known him all my life.

I’ve read his blogs and learned how much of a fighter he was and how much he loved his family. He had been a good and doting father to his children blood related or not, a loving and faithful husband to Pia, an amazing person to his friends, a greatly esteemed musician and most of all a proud citizen of this country. The proudest I should say. And as a fan, this is my way of paying tribute to the Man from Manila, The Master Rapper and my kababayan Francis “Kiko” Durango Magalona.

You’ll be sorely missed but your legacy will remain in our minds and hearts forever. Hats off to you! A salute to a True Hero and real Pinoy Idol. This is how I will always remember you Tito Francis.
