Assorted variations on my last name, sometimes Bernie, which was my father's name

What made you want to work at Flintridge Sacred Heart?

I had worked for and been friends with Sister Ramona for about ten years when she told me of an opening at Flintridge Sacred Heart. I knew that she loved the school, and the way she spoke about it immediately interested me. She invited me to visit and meet some of the faculty; I began in the fall of 1998.

What has been your favorite teaching moment at Flintridge Sacred Heart?

All my favorite teaching moments are marked by the probing questions of curious students.

What most excites you about your work here on the Hill?

My colleagues in the English department and newly remodeled Room 24

What is Flintridge Sacred Heart's best kept secret?

Mr. Buxman's Tuesday salons and Mr. Thornton's extensive knowledge of Romantic poetry

What's your favorite spot on campus?

the Junior Patio where, early in the morning before the students arrive, you can usually see a deer or two wandering by

Who has made the biggest impact on your life?

My wife, Rosa Velia Bernstein, née Pinela

What book, movie, work of art, piece of music, etc. can you not imagine life without?

"The Death of Ivan Ilych," the collected works of Chekhov, "The Trial" and "Psalm 146"

What did you want to be when you grew up (at age 12)?

For public consumption the answer was always "a doctor," but I think Batman was closer to the truth.

What do you want to be when you grow up (now)?

A math teacher
