A Chronicler's Life

How the Couple N&V (Nausea & Vomiting) and Cousins Mr. Heartburn and Ms. Sleeplessness Changed My Life

Posted by Joshua at 1:38 am

Being a voracious reader, nutrition books included, I was pretty sure that I knew how to eat well for me and my baby the moment I learned that I’m expecting. I’ve raided the supermarkets and stocked our fridge with nature’s best baby-building food: chicken, the fresh fish, a wide variety of dairy aside from my milk for pregnancy, whole grains and a superfluity of produce.

And then couple N and V introduced themselves to me and everything ended up in the bathroom sink.

The smell of chicken being boiled which makes me drool with hunger before still makes me drool alright, drool first then throw-up. The fresh fish especially the fillet ones with tartar sauce which used to be oh so delectable are so detestable now. I won’t last another bite without reeling and after some tummy churning activity; I’ll ran to my nearest favorite place of our home…the bathroom. So what about milk? My growing baby sure needs this for teeth and bone building. But what can I do? I tried gulping down the entire glass without breathing but even before I reach 3 with my counting to relax me, everything went out already even through my nose! That was really painful I’m telling you. The whole grains are another story; no rice and bread for me please even the toasted ones. I can’t take the taste of it. I have this metallic taste on my tongue for grains that does not seem to come off no matter how many times I brush my teeth or how often I use my tongue cleaner. Good thing that I can stomach clear soups and mashed potatoes sometimes without the gravy of course. I intend to eat all kinds of fruits like apples, oranges, grapes, pears, watermelons but I guess N & V have other plans for me. I can only eat sour fruits like green mangoes, guavas, mandarins and any fruit that I can dip in vinegar and salt. So that leaves us with the last on our list: the greens and the yellows. I’m a salad monster well I used to be one that it is. I love romaine lettuce most especially. It’s crunchy, delicious and nutritious. Did you know that Romaine lettuce has as much as seven times beta-carotene, two times the calcium and twice the potassium than that of iceberg? Anyway, as I’ve said I’m a sucker for salads but now I can’t even go near one without turning into the deepest shade of green. Pumpkin is my favorite too. I love soups made of it even pies but that was ages ago well it seems so because I get so sick in the stomach with it now. I even had an ailment because of severe vomiting which led to dehydration that’s why I was hospitalized for the nth time. Learn more about it in my previous post, Hyperemesis Gravidarum.

Thank God I’m much better now. And N & V do not visit me that often anymore, they still do occasionally though. They still never fail to greet me a very good morning. Such lovely couple, aren’t they? I know that it won’t be long until they bid me goodbye. I can already feel it. I’ll surely miss them when that time comes. But unfortunately fortunately they will be replaced with cousins Mr. Heartburn and Ms. Sleeplessness very soon. So I guess I won’t get too sad when Mr. and Mrs. NV finally leave me. The cousins already made a few attempts to make their presence known to me. I’ll be sharing with you my miserable wonderful misadventures adventures with them in my succeeding posts.

Stay healthy everyone! ;-)

    Hi couz,

Hope you’re feeling better already. The first trimester is the toughest. After that, we’ll just have to wait until we deliver our little one. :) I’m so excited for the both us. :) Cheers! Have a healthy and safe pregnancy!
